Letter to the Editor of the Swindon Advertiser 12th February
Dear Sir Mrs Johnston (letters, 12 February) who makes insinuations about Gordon Brown, has a very short memory. The Princess Alexandra RAF Hospital at Wroughton closed in 1996; one year before Labour came to power. Labour vigorously opposed the plans, unlike the last Tory Government which pushed through the closure against the wishes of the local community, including the armed forces. In contrast, Labour replaced the crumbling Princess Margaret Hospital with the state of the art Great Western Hospital in 2003 and opened the Brunel Treatment Centre with extra wards and theatres in 2005. We also now have drop-in health centres, new doctors' surgeries around the town, two emergency NHS walk-in dental services and hospital waiting times for most treatments set to drop to 18 weeks by the end of this year. Mrs Johnston's lucky she's not whisked back 12 years to the bad old Tory days of three year waits for hip operations! Yours sincerely Anne Snelgrove MP
