Anne calls on residents to sign the STOP Cervical Cancer petition The NHS Cervical Screening programme's national call re-call system introduced in 1988 saves 4,500 lives every year. In 2008, twenty eyars later a national Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programme will be implemented. Young women aged 12 to 18 will be protected against the HPV types, which cause 75% of all cervical cancers. A combination of organised national screening and vaccination programmes will contribute to the eradication of this devastating female cancer in future generations. However, in many parts of the European Union women do not have access to cervical screening. As a result 60,000 new cases of cervical cancer are reported each year with 28,000 losing their lives to this largely, preventable cancer. The STOP Cervical Cancer Petition aims to collect 1,000,000 signatures from within the EU to bring pressure to bear on its member states and other European countries to significantly reduce cervical cancer incidence and mortality. | |
