Local MP campaigns for Solar Panels on Parliament
Anne Snelgrove, Labour MP for Swindon has signed a House of Commons Motion resolving to use the vast roof space of the House of Commons buildings for solar panels. Early Day Motion 2007 was tabled by John Mann MP, the full text is: That this House recognises the need for action to combat climate change, and that it is the first national legislature to set binding national limits on carbon dioxide emissions; further recognises the importance of the environment as an issue for the public; believes that more could be done domestically and internationally with each individual and organisation taking their role more seriously; and resolves to use the vast roof space of the House of Commons buildings for solar panels so that this House can do more to reduce its own emissions and take an active lead in the fight against climate change. Anne said: “Westminster needs to show leadership in tackling climate change. People in Swindon are making changes to their life styles to reduce carbon – MPs and Government should do the same.” Anne is also drawing together a cross-party coalition to toughen up the Climate Change Bill: Background: Anne’s Public Sector Buildings (Energy Performance) Private Members’ Bill was blocked by Tory MP Christopher Chope. The Bill had Government support – and 275 MPs supported Early Day Motion 673 in support of the Bill, of whom 19 were Parliamentary Private Secretaries. Anne is therefore intending to table an amendment with the provisions of her Bill at the Report Stage of the Climate Change Bill. The amendment will require all newly procured central Government buildings to have an energy efficiency rating of A or B in accordance with the energy rating system used for Energy Performance Certificates. This will help drive down energy use on the public estate and help the UK to reach its emissions reductions targets | |
